When to get help, not tips

Some leg symptoms need a professional, and some need urgent care. Do not try to self-treat these.

    • Call emergency services if leg swelling or calf pain comes with sudden shortness of breath, chest pain or coughing up blood.
    • See a doctor promptly for swelling, warmth, redness or pain in one leg, especially the calf, which can be a sign of a blood clot.
    • See a doctor if a leg is pale, cold, numb or very painful, if you cannot put weight on it after an injury, if a joint locks or gives way, or if you heard a pop in your heel or calf.
    • Get checked if you have sores that will not heal (especially with diabetes), frequent night cramps, or leg pain that keeps returning when you walk.
